My Portugal Must-Do List

After living in Portugal and exploring nearly every corner, here are the experiences I recommend to every visitor.

1. Ride Tram 28 in Lisbon

The iconic yellow tram that winds through Alfama, Graca, and Baixa. It's touristy, yes โ€” but it's also a genuinely fun way to see the old neighborhoods. Pro tip: go early morning to avoid crowds.

2. Visit Sintra's Palaces

Pena Palace is a fairytale come to life. The colors, the architecture, the gardens โ€” it's unlike anything else in Europe. Combine it with Quinta da Regaleira for the mysterious initiatic well.

3. Explore the Benagil Caves

The Algarve's most famous sea cave is accessible by kayak or boat tour. The natural skylight above the beach inside the cave is one of the most photographed spots in Portugal.

4. Walk Across Porto's Dom Luis Bridge

The double-deck iron bridge offers incredible views of Porto's Ribeira district and the Douro River. Cross to the Vila Nova de Gaia side for port wine tastings.

5. Eat a Pastel de Nata

Not just any pastel de nata โ€” try them at Pasteis de Belem in Lisbon for the original recipe. Sprinkle with cinnamon and enjoy warm.

6. Surf in Nazare or Ericeira

Nazare has the biggest waves in the world. Ericeira is a World Surfing Reserve. Whether you're a beginner or pro, Portugal's coast has perfect waves.

7. Explore the Douro Valley

Portugal's famous wine region is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Take a river cruise, visit quintas (wine estates), and enjoy the terraced vineyards.

8. Wander Through Alfama

Lisbon's oldest neighborhood is a maze of narrow streets, fado music bars, and stunning miradouros (viewpoints). Get lost โ€” that's the best way to explore it.

9. Visit the Azores

These volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic are Portugal's hidden gem. Whale watching, hot springs, crater lakes, and some of the greenest landscapes you'll ever see.

10. Watch Sunset at Cabo da Roca

The westernmost point of continental Europe. Stand on the cliffs and watch the sun set into the Atlantic. It's simple but unforgettable.

Final Thoughts

Portugal packs an incredible amount of diversity into a small country. From world-class cities to remote islands, there's something for every type of traveler. These are just my top 10 โ€” I could easily make this a top 50!
